WATER POSITION

RESERVOIRS FILLING CRISIS NOT PAST The total storage of water in the city reservoirs yesterday morning was about the same as it was a week previously. With a gain of 5,500,000 gallons on Saturday and Sunday, the total supply stood at 81,856,000 gallons —still not up to the minimum of 100,000,000 gallons wanted £y the Water Committtee before the crisis will be considered past. The chairman of the committee, Cr N. D. Anderson, said yesterday that the week-end gain was disappointing after such a heavy rainfall. Because of the excessive dryness in the catchment areas after the heat wave, the week-end rain was quickly absorbed and, consequently,, it is anticipated that the inflow to the reservoirs will be greatly reduced. Although all indutry was silent on Sunday, the water consumption was considerable. Cr Anderson said that he did not like appealing to the public each day to co-operate with the committee, but in view of the continued shortage and the uncertainty of an improvement, the public would have to save as much Water as possible. A complete shutdown would be disastrous to industry and places such as hospitals and . the milk treatment centre. The holdings at the various reservoirs yesterday morning were:— Ross Creek: 27,060,000 gallons. Southern Reservoir: 34,100,000 gallons. Sullivan’s Dam: 16,750,000 gallons. Service Reservoirs: 3,946,000 gallons.
