Apple and Pear Board Appointed

Two Representatives Of Industry in Otago

PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 17. The' personnel of the new Apple and Pear Marketing Board, set up under the Apple and Pear Marketing Act of last season, was announced to-day Dy the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Cullen, as follows: Chairman, Mr H. Turner (Otago); nominees of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation, Messrs G. C. McMurtry (Waimea, Nelson) and J. A. Hainsworth (Central Otago); Government nominees), Messrs K. B. Longmore (Assistant Director of Marketing) and M. J. Moriarty (secretary of the Stabilisation Commission). The Minister said the board was a strong one with members whose past experience had made them well fitted to perform the tasks allotted. The chairman, Mr H. Turner, who was born in Dunedin, has had a long connection with the fruit industry and was one of the pioneers of the fruit export trade in Otago. He was manager and a partner in the firm of Tonkin and Co. from 1910 to 1924, and

he then organised the business of H. Turner and Co. Mr Turner went to London in 1931 and until the outbreak of the war he was London manager for the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board. In 1940. he became Government shipping liaison officer and the New Zealand Government representative with the Ministry of Food. He relinquished these posts in 1946 to return to his orchard at Ettrick. Besides his close connection with the fruit-growing industry, Mr Turner was also associated with gold dredging in Central Otago. He has been president the Otago A. and P. Society, the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, and the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. Mr J. Hainsworth is a son of Mr C. P. Hainsworth, manager of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, held in Dunedin in 1925-26. In 1925 he and his father established the Riversdale Orchard at Ettrick, and later acquired the Brooklands Orchard Company. He has taken an active interest in the fruitgrowing industry, and has been a member since its inceptioh of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation Advisory Committee and of the New Zealand Fruit Marketing Council.
