FINE FIELDS ENGAGED IN HAZLETT GOLD CUP AT DUNEDIN MEETING

SPORTING

• The names of many outstanding gallopers of their day appear in the list of winners of the James Hazlett Gold Cup, a race which commemorates the memory of the father of Mr L. C. Hazlett, president of the Dunedin Jockey Club. Appropriately enough, the first name on the list is that of Sister Radius, who was raced by Mr L. C. Hazlett. At the time the race was known as the Hazlett Memorial Plate.

Included in the list are Warstep, Fiery Cross, Amythas, Limerick, Aussie, Nightmarch, Silver Scorn, Silver Ring, Royal Chief, Defaulter, Royal Lancer, Kindergarten, Golden Souvenir, and last year’s winner, Excellency. Many of these horses went on to make turf history. Silver Ring won the race tv/ice, in 1934 and 1936. Members of the Ellis family have figured prominently in the race, A. E. having ridden five winners, L. J. three, and W. F. one. The field for this year’s race, which will be run on the second day of the meeting, is a good one and such horses as Signal Officer, Golden Amber, Excellency, Julius Caesar, Magical, St. Bruno, and Wantwood should produce a good contest.
