DUNEDIN LADIES’ BRASS BAND

The concluding social and dance of the Ladies’ Brass Band for 1948 was held in Crawford Lounge on Thursday night, when Mr and Mrs Hilmer Davie received the guests, who included Lady Cameron (patroness), the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, representatives from city bands, parents and friends. A special item, “ Rusking Ballet,” given by Wilma Burt, Bevney Burt, Betty Scott, Ngaire Brown, Gwen Johnstone, Lorna Cath Newall, and Myra Hemsley, was the " hit ” of the evening. Lorna Hewitt and Cath Newall entertained with a tap dance. Joan Maxwell was the pianist. Mr James Dixon, the president, said he was very pleased that the Mayoress, Lady Cameron, and Mr Jones had been able to attend. Francis Applegate, the youngest member of the band, presented Lady Cameron with a bouquet. Mr Dixon presented tokens of appreciation to Mr Davie (the conductor), Betty Milnes (the secretary), and Moyra Meenan (the treasurer). Dance music was supplied by Pat Harbrow's Band. Mr J. F. Himburg was the M.C. , . The band will give its last concert for 1948 to-morrow at the Gardens. Mr Hilmer Davie, conductor, has selected a good programme, which will include “Arnoldo selection, “ Gloria 12th Mass,” ” Phantom Brigade,” marches and novelty drumming. A special selection of Christmas carols will also be played. The guest performer, Miss Doreen Harrison, will be heard in vocal numbers.
