COAL PRODUCTION

BRITISH BOARD SHOWS LOSS A surplus of well over £1,000,000 was achieved by Britain’s National Coal Board in the first nine months of this year. The third quarterly report recently published shows, however, an estimated deficit of just under £373,000 for the third quarter, colliery profits amounting to £3,477,000 against £3,850,000 for interest and interim income payable to the Minister of Fuel and Power. This deficit is attributed mainly to the summer holidays in the industry which the board says “ materially affected” colliery output costs and proceeds. A contributory factor was the payment of arrears of retrospective wage increases to coke-overi workers.
