FINAL GALLOPS

ASCOT LAD AND CORAL ARC IN GOOD TRIAL Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 18. The conditions were pleasant at Riccarton this morning for the final gallops before the opening of the Cup meeting. The outside of the course proper provided good going after rain earlier in the week. Eight New Zealand Cup candidates went out early to work together over a mile and a-quarter, but Signal Officer was left standing, refusing to take part in the trial. Ascot Lad led out, with Cowper and Welcome Guest next, then Coral Arc and Royal Tan, while Bruce and Beau le Havre followed at intervals. Cowper moved up going to the five-fur-long post and was out clear at the half mile, where Coral Arc was next, three lengths away. Coral Arc headed Cowper in the straight, but Ascot Lad moved up again, the trio being kept going in an interesting tussle over the final furlong, with Ascot Lad winning by a neck. Royal Tan was six lengths back, with another gap to Bruce and Welcome Guest, while Beau le Havre was last. It was a useful performance for the first three, but the others did not please.
