“Smog” Claims Victims In American Town
Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, Oct. 30. Fifteen persons have died in the small mill town of Donora, Pennsylvania, which has a population of 15,000, from what the health authorities say was the direct result of a smothering “ smog.” All the deathes occurred unexpectedly after a fog which prevailed for several days and became exceptionally heavy. Mixed with smoke from industrial concerns, a thick “ smog ” was created. A hospital authority said: “The situation is serious, but not one to become panicky about.” A member of the Health Board said: “ The deaths seem to have hit people who were suffering from cardiac or asthmatic conditions. There is no doubt that ‘ smog ’ has been the cause.”
