HOWE AGAIN

HOTHAM HANDICAP SUCCESS V.R.C. MEETING OPENED Rec. 8.45 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 31. Heavy rain fell practically all the afternoon of the opening of the V.R.C. spring meeting. One of the best performances of the day was the victory of the New Zealand horse. Howe, in the Hotliam Handicap. He carried 9.12 and was always favourite. Running to the front a furlong from home, Howe went on to defeat Fresh Boy by a length and a-quarter. with the outsider, Hongmeng, nearly two lengths away third. Howe is now a firmer favourite for the Melbourne Cup. in which he carries 9.5, including a 61b penalty for winning the Moonnee Valley Cup. Howe has improved with racing and in l'oui handicap starts in Melbourne, he has scored three wins and a second. His second was in the Caulfield Cup in which lie was very unlucky to be defeated. If he does as well in the Cup on Tuesday, when the going seems likely to be heavy, he will be one of the hardest to defsat. The Victoria Derby caused a surprise, as the iittle fancied Comic Court scoicd easily from Foxzaml and the favourite. Carbon Copy. The heavy going was against Carbon Copy, and he may do better in the Cup if the going is firmer. Vagabond, who was best backed against Cur bon Copy, was never a possibility.
