CHAMPIONSHIP ROWING
NATIONAL EVENTS ALLOTTED MEETING OF ASSOCIATION P.A. WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. The 1949 national rowing championships will be held on Karapiro Lake on February 26, and the Interprovincial Eightoar Championship Race in Wellington, probably on the Saturday before Easter. These decisions were made at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association on Saturday. The meeting also decided to hold the Interprovinciai Race alternately in Wellington and Picton. Referring to the Aramoho crew, which is to compete in Australia this season, the meeting decided that the crew would row under the club and not national colours. While it was felt by some delegates that the crew had deserved the distinction of being designated a national crew, it was pointed out that a precedent would be created which it might be difficult to ignore. Mr S. I. Kidd, the secre-tary-treasurer of the association, was appointed as 'manager to accompany the rowers. Remits aimed at improvements of the championship regatta were moved by the Wanganui Association. It was decided that a condition of the allotment of the regatta should be the provsiion of a suitable umpire’s launch. The council’s representative would have the power to supervise the running of all events, and the whole programme would have to be approved by the council of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association. In connection with the forthcoming Empire Games, it was decided that six selectors—one each from the Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago Associations—should be appointed at once, and that a single selector should be appointed from those six later this season. Mr C. E. Herdman (Auckland) was appointed as president for the coming year. The election of other officers resulted:— Vice-presidents, Messrs E. J. Crotty (Wanganui), F. H. Thompson (Canterbury); council—Messrs A. D. Bayfield, R. W. Allum (Wellington), A. Ross, C. R Riesop (Auckland), F. G. Obom (Wanganui), M. A. Turner (Canterbury), A, A. Cockroft (Southland). T. Porter (Otago); secretary-treasurer, Mr S. I. Kidd.
