OFFICIAL OPENING
YACHTING SEASON LARGE FLEET HOISTS SAILS One of the most successful official openings to a yachting season on the Otago Harbour was held on Saturday, when, in spite of a rather light breeze, there was some fine racing. Mr R. E .Ham, president of the Otaga. Yacht and Motor Boat Association, declaring the season open at a short function at the boat harbour during the afternoon, said that yachting was increasing rapidly in popularity in Dunedin, and the introduction of the P-ciass for boys would give a further impetus to the sport. He appealed to men with boating experience to lend their support to yachting by helping with its administration and with the instruction of beginners. “ We did not win any cups last year, but we are improving our position each season," Mr Ham said. “ Judging by this opening, we should have a very good year.*’ * Visitors and representatives of other clubs on the harbour were welcomed by Mr N. W. Fenton, commodore of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club. During the afternoon selections were contributed by the Dunedin Ladies’ Brass Band. A series of club races, in which a large fleet took part, was held during the afternoon under light conditions. Results:— Takapuna Class.—Destiny (3min) 1, Oakie (2min) 2, Julie (scr) 3.
