The Otago Hospital Board last night passed a motion of sympathy with Dr McMillan, a member of the board, who Is ill. The board trusted he would soon be restored to health. Cr Sidey has been nominated by the City Council for appointment to the New Zealand Library Association. Cr Barr is a present member of the cbuncil. At a meeting of the Otago Hospital Board last night the appointment of Dr Brian E. Pierard as registrar of the neurosurgery department in place of Dr J. P. Lindsay, Who had resigned, was approved. Mr Justice Christie, who has been presiding over sittings of the Supreme Court in Dunedin, will leave for Wellington by air to-day. He will preside at a sitting of the Supreme Court in Wanganui on Monday. The chairman of the Library Committee of the City Council. Cr Sidey, together with Cr Barr and the city librarian. Mr A. G. W. Dunningham, have been appointed to represent the council at the annual conference of the New Zealand Library Association here in May ot next year. Mr A. S. Falconer and Mr V. C. v Preen, president and vice-president respectively of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, left yesterday morning for Wellington, where they will attend the bi-monthly meeting of the New Zealand executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to-day. Mr L. G. Garland has been appointed district officer for Otago of the Disabled Servicemen's Re-establishment League. Mr Garland, who was field officer of the district, replaces Mr F. McLusky. who has been appointed district officer for the Auckland area. Dr J. P. Shaw has retired after 28 years }n the medical profession at Mosgiel. In recognition of his services and as a token of the high esteem in which he was held, a public meeting was held at Mosgiel last night, when the Mayor, Mr W. P. Hartstonge, presented him with an illuminated address and other gifts. A number of speakers paid tribute -to Dr Shaw’s outstanding work in the Taieri district. .* A further 19 honorary rangers to protect public property have been nominated to the Reserves Committee of the City council tor appointm-nt. They are Mrs D. T. Vorley and Messrs J. V. Trezise, F. Burton, J. Mathie, W. S. McEwan, G. T. Hopwood, W. St, Clair, J. E. Graham, P. Beaumont, N. H. Shepherd, F. Greenhalgh, E R. Smith. T. Fogarty, J. M. Sloan, D. Hunter, D. Martin, M. C. Henderson, J. A. Gray .and W. Sanders. The Dunedin Headmasters' Association has also intimated its agreement to co-operate with the council in the prevention of vandalism, particularly In the direction of training children in their civic responsibilities.
