EXPORT MEAT PRODUCTION INCREASE IN SOUTH ISLAND Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. New Zealand export meat production for the 1947-48 season, ended September 30, was 347,036 tons, 7788 tons less than last season’s record output. The figures have just been released by the Meat Producers’ Board. Killings were maintained at a high level in the early stages of the season, but the drought which developed later in northern districts was responsible for a falling away of output. An outstanding feature of the season was the New Zealand record output of lamb for export.. The season’s total of lamb shipped was 11,950,279 carcasses, an increase of 557,400 over last season’s figure and 55,715 over the previous record established in 1945-46. Sheep killings were down, possibly because of the tendency among farmers to withhold stock for wool purposes. The average carcass weights for lamb and mutton also failed to achieve last year’s levels. South Island production continued high, and reached a total of 116,548 tons, exceeding last year’s total of 114,414 tons, but was insufficient to offset the loss in the north.
