WET FRIDAYS
OCCURRENCE IN DUNEDIN UNWELCOME REGULARITY “A bleak wind from the south-west and squalls with heavy hail”. . . “there was early morning rain”. . . “the sun failed to pierce the clouds over Dunedin &nd a threat of rain eventuated at night . . These are extracts from Daily Times paragraphs covering the weather in Dunedin over recent Fridays. The point is that wet Fridays have become almost the rule since the first week in August, and in the 11 Fridays from then until yesterday rain has been recorded on eight of them. Exceptions to the rule have been August 13—the best for weeks —August 27, and SeDtember 17. A brief downpour eary yesterday afternoon qualified the city for its fourth successive wet Friday. Pre- ' vious experience has taught citizens to accept the ritual of taking a coat even on promising mornings. Whether the receipt of rain on Fridays will rival the record for Wanganui where in 1946 rain fell on over 30 Fridays in a row, is a subject for conjecture.
