WHALE MEAT
LARGE SHIPMENT FOR BRITAIN P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 12. A shipment of edible whale meat, the first consignment thus year, will leave Wellington for London to-mor-row in the Shaw Savill cargo vessel Taranaki. The shipment, of 2200 cases, containing lib tins, will be followed next month by smaller quantities. The total whale meat sent to Britain this year would amount to only about 50 tons, said the manager of the Picton firm which cans the meat. ■ This was far short of the amount whicn could be sold in Britain, but under present circumstances it was all that could be taken from the season’s catch of 92 whales. Taken from the whaling station 'in the Tory Channel to picton by launch in 401 b chunks, it was coo'ked under pressure an.l canned in Picton. when the cooked meat resembled stewing steak.
Whale meat had been shipped abroad for the past three seasons. For two years UNRRA had taken the whole of the catch, but last year mem had been sent to British markets, for which all this season’s catch was destined. <
