CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED

Waitaki High School Board The Rev. A. Marshall was re-elected chairman of the Waitaki High School Board for the ensuing two years at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. It was agreed that in connection with the proposed bus turn-around at the school the board make application to the department for a grant to pay for the completed job. The appointment of Mr K. R. Hutcheson to a grade four position at the boys school was confirmed. Tlie Education Department advised that the Building Controller had agreed to the proposed alterations to the rector's study. The principal, Miss J. B. Wilson, reported ' that the Waimate School had invited three teams to visit Waimate on August 19 to play return basketball matches. On August 13, two teams from the Otago Girls’ High School would be the guests of the school and would play annual interschooi basketball games. The Corso Club continued to prepare parcels weeklv for despatch to Britain, and it was the aim of the club to continue to pack and post six food parcels a week. The rector. Mr J. T. Burrows, in his report, stated that a gift of books to the school library had been received from Mr Dobson, of Ouse street. Mr MacGibbon, an old boy, now resident in Sydney, last year forwarded a handpaintejj chart of the stars in the southern and northern hemispheres.* He had now followed this up with a valuable set of slides, which in conjunction with the chart, would be most useful in teaching elementary astronomy.

The Waitaki Old Boys’ Association advised that it had purchased a system of electric clocks which it desired to erect at the school as a memorial to the late Mr M. K. McCulloch The letter stated that the system comprised a master clock and six slaves. Permission was granted to install the clocks.

As a result of the recent visits to the hospital by pupils of the girls' school, Mrs M. E. Berry reported that several girls had intimated that they would be taking up a nursing career.
