GORE BEATS ST. KEVIN’S

HIGH SCHOOLS' MATCH I Special to the Dally Times . OAMARU, Aug. 11. The annual school Rugby football match between St. Kevin’s College and Gore Boys’ High School was played at St. Kevin’s to-day. Gore won by 8 points to 3 in a fast and open game. St. Kevin’s had the better of the play for the first 10 minutes, but the Gore forwards played much looser football, and with good dribbling and quick breaking from the scrums, gave their backs excellent support. Rucking by both packs was hard, but the St. Kevin’s pack received the greater share of the ball. Faulty passing by St. Kevin’s, however, nullified the work of the forwards. The Gore backs handled more cleanly, and on several occasions looked dangerous. Gore used to advantage the in-pass to loose forwards,” and the inside backs raced outside their wings to give overlap. At the end of the first half, W. Olliver, St. Kevin’s half-back, gathered In the ball from a ruck on the Gore line to dive over. The half-time score was St. Kevin s 3, Gore nil. , , ~ From the outset of the second half. Gore attacked strongly and held a territorial advantage throughout, using scrumscrewing tactics and stab kicks to advantage. Gore pressed on to the St. Kevirrs line for about 10 minutes, but the seige was lifted when a penalty was awarded to St. Kevin’s. Gore again took up the attack and soon after, E. Diack, the Gore centre, received the ball to cut through and score. Diack also converted. St. Kevin’s again attempted to play tight football but hard rucking and loose play by the Gore forwards kept the game open. With 15 minutes to go, R. Archer, the Gore first five-eighth, received the ball on the 25-yard line, wide out, to kick a neat field goal. Gore continued to press the attack and at full time was on St. Kevin’s line. w , For St. Kevins, D. McDonald (centre three-quarter) and B. Kay (full-back) played solid games, while J. Ryan and J. Pottinger were the pick of the forwards. An excellent exhibition of fiveeighth play was given by R. Archer, the Gore first five-eighth, while T. Thompson, the second five-eighth, also played a sound game. T. Orr was always dangerous on the left wing and made several good breaks although out-weighted. M. O'Connor, as hooker, gave the Gore backs good service, while L. Moffat played hard rucking football. The final score was:—Gore 8, St. Kevins 3. Mr F. Williamson was the referee,
