COSTLY CONSTRUCTION
PREFABRICATED HOUSES FURTHER IMPORTATIONS UNLIKELY P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. The Minister of Housing, Mr Semple, answering Mr M. H. Oram (Oppn.. Manawatu) in the House of Representatives to-day said that the recent experience in the importation of one prefabricated house from Sweden showed that such houses were more costly in New Zealand than the normally constructed house. There was also very little advantage in the time of completion of the imported house as such items as foundations, roof tiles, chimney, plumbing, electrical fittings, and reticulation had to be provided. Unless these disadvantages could be overcome it was not intended to import additional prefabricated houses
Steps had been taken to check with Australia on her reported purchase of 10.000 prefabricated houses from Finland.
