SLACKENING OF INTEREST
APPLICATIONS CLOSE THIS ' WEEK Applications from students of Otago University for consideration as Rhodes Scholarship nominees will close at the end of this week. So far, only one application has been received. While this is no indication that further entries will not be forthcoming—students, like other citizens, frequently leave things till the last minutp—it is yet another pointer to the lessened amount of interest which is being taken in the Rhodes Scholarships. The opportunities available to returning Rhodes scholars have not always been up to expectations, and there are many more overseas scholarships available than there used to be. These are factors which have led to a certain decline in the enthusiasm of New Zealand students for an award which was once considered the highest of distinctions.
