GORSE FIRE ON PENINSULA KINDLES INTEREST IN CITY
A fire on the Otago Peninsula last night attracted the attention of many people in the city. The fire was among the gorse along the slopes above the Portobello road between Waverley and Challis’S'. At a late hour last night, the Daily Times visited the scene. The fire was burning fairly fiercely in two places and some large bluegum trees were in its path, although it was doubtful if these would be destroyed because the flames were not leaping high and there was little wind. No houses were in the vicinity, nor had any people congregated, although some probably investigated for themselves earlier in the night. At an early hour this morning, the fires were still burning. At 10 o’clock last night, the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Brigade received a call to what was thought to be a fire in Frederick street or Anzac avenue. The full brigade turned out but found that the preson giving the call from the top of Frederick street had mistaken the Peninsula fire for one in the city.
The Daily Times also received advice of a “ building blazing in Union street,” but this, on investigation, also proved to be the same Peninsula fire.
