TRANSPORT OF FRUIT
GROWERS SEEK ACTION CENTRAL OTAGO RAIL SERVICE Special Correspondent WELINGTON, Aug. 11. A thorough investigation of South Island-North Island transport for future fruit marketing seasons with particular reference to air freight will be made by a committee to be appointed by directors of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation. This decision was reached by the annual conference of the federation to-day on the motion of the Teviot Fruitgrowers’ Association. The conference referred to this committee several proposals from Otago fruitgrowing areas for the improvement of rail transport. The Earnscleugh Association asked that the Railways Department be urged to improve its service in the carriage of fruit. The Upper Clutha Association asked particularly for an improved rail service between Central Otago and Timaru for fruit, and also proposed that the Railways Department should be asked to reinstate the night fruit and stock train, leaving Cromwell in the evening rather than between midnight and 1 a.m., so that fruit for Dunedin could catch the morning market.
