ANNUAL BOXING TOURNAMENT G. CHANG WINS CHAMPIONSHIP The annual boxing tournament ol the John McGlashan College was held in the college hall last night before a large attendance of parents and friends. Twentytwo bouts were decided, these without exception being well contested and revealing that the boys had been given a good grounding by their instructor, Mr A. Goodman. The standard all round was the highest for some years, most of the contestants showing a good knowledge of the hits as well as leading, countering and blocking effectively. The school championship was won by G. Chang after a spirited bout with J. Gray, the winner proving himself to be an aggressive two-handed boxer. A brother of the school champion, A. Chang, was awarded the trophy 'for the most scientific boxer, and his opponent, D. Mac Kay, was awarded the trophy for the best loser. K. Greenslade won the trophy for the most helpful boxer In the school class. The chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr A. C. Cameron, thanked the members of the Otago Boxing Association for controlling the tournament and congratulated the Instructor, Mr Goodman, on the results he had achieved during the year. Mr Cameron also referred to the fine sporting spirit in- which the bouts had been fought. The Otago Boxing Association supplied the officials, who were: M.C., Mr F. M. Paape 1 referees, Messrs S. Paris and R. M. Morris; judges—Messrs C. E. Brown, A. E. Edwards and J. Galbraith; timekeepers. Messrs S. Brown and W. H Cockerill. The results were:— D. Mclnnes (4.10) outpointed T. Lloyd (4.3)* B. Henderson (6.8) outpointed A. Bremford (5.12). J. Whitcombe (5.13) outpointed P. Shaw (6.2). K. Chartres (6.3) outpointed J. Harris (6.6). R. Bain (5.2) outpointed L. Ritchie (5.12). B Hall (6.11) outpointed A. Smythe (6.8). D-, Greenslade (5.6) drew with B. Stoneman (5.2).
B. Gourley (0.10) outpointed W. Finlay (6.10). D. Cameron (6.9) outpointed K. Greenslade (6.9). R. Couchman (6.0) outpointed J. Aitken (6.10). A. Chang (8.1) outpointed D. Mac Kay (10.21. R. Brett (8.0) outpointed G. Ryburn (6.10). B. Stanbrldge (8.3) outpointed R. Wilson (8.4). J. Reid (4.9) drew with L. Young (4.7). R. Wright (6.7) outpointed I. Halsted (6.10). C. Burdon (5.5) outpointed P. Sanderson (5.7). P. Buchanan (5.0) outpointed P. Halsted (5.4). R. Riley (4.9) outpointed G. Gumpatzes (4.8 J). R. Lewin (9.4) outpointed R. Craig (10.0) W. Macalister (8.4) outpointed M. Russell (7.10). G. Paape (9.5) outpointed N. Mair (9.11). School Championship G. Chang (9.10) outpointed J. Gray (9.10) in a willing and well-contested bout. Chang carried the fight to his opponent, but Gray was willing to mix It all the way, although Chang was the harder puncher. There was not much between the contestants, but Chang’s forcefulness gained him the decision.
