SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Waitaki’s Narrow Win Waltaki had a narrow victory over Timaru Boys’ High School in the annual match played at the Oamaru Show Grounds yesterday. The ground was in good condition and hard, fast football was seen. Timaru held the territorial advantage throughout the first half, being supported by a strong westerly wind, but the tables were turned in the second half. The Timaru forwards were heavier than the Waitaki pack, and played loose, bustling football, but the Waitaki forwards played a much"’tighter game. Although smaller, the Waitaki backs functioned well and- the ball travelled truly along the chain. The Timaru backs did not combine as well as was expected and passing often broke d6wn close into the scrum. At half time neither side had crossed the other’s line, although Timaru led by 6. points to 3, a field goal by T. Gallagher, who also kicked a goal from a penalty, to a penalty goal by J. Martin. Both sets of backs tackled solidly throughout the first half and were well backed up by their forwards. About 10 minutes after the spell, commenced, J. Anderson equalled the score for Waitaki with a goal from a penalty, and shortly afterwards, J. Harris placed Waitaki in the lead with a fine score after the ball had travelled the length of Waitaki’s back line. The Waitaki total was increased to 12 when J. Brownlie scored after another brilliant back movement. The Timaru forwards took the play deep into Waitaki’s twenty-five, where from an ensuing scrum B. Moore cut through Waitaki’s defence to score near the posts, T. Gallagher ednverting. Play at this stage became very keen, both sets of forwards working hard to supply their backs with the ball, but Waitaki held its advantage and pressed Timaru in the closing stages. The final score was:—
