LONG SERVICE ENDS

NARBADA SOLD TO SHIPBREAKERS P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 4. The Union Steam Ship Company’s Narbada, of 8988 tons, having reached the end of her economic life, has been sold for breaking-up. She is at present en route to the United Kingdom via Panama with a refrigerated cargo, and the head office of the company stated to-day that delivery of the ship to the buyers will be made on discharge of this cargo. For many years before the war the Narbada was a well-known and popular vessel in the India, Singapore, Java, New Zealand trade. She is being replaced by two speedy vessels, the Wairata, of 5255 tons, now en route to Singapore and India, and the Wairumu, of 6751 tons, which is being fitted with some refrigerated cargo space before taking up her running in that trade.
