Jottings Surpeen, who had to be destroyed at Riccarton, was the only tubed horse to win the Grand National Steeplechase.

The Wingatui-trained Gold Song shows promise as a hurdler and with. 9.6 he may make a bold showing in the Trial Hurdles at Riccarton.

Leading Trainers Mrs L. Campbell and J. H. Jefferd topped the list of winning trainers for the past reason with 33 wins, and F. Smith, of Takanini, was second with 30.

Improvement Likely Distinction stayed on well in the second division of the Brabazon Handicap and was only a neck behind Aganev at the post. The Foxbridge galloper may show improvement at the Grand National meeting. New Handicapper Mr J. A. White, jun., of Dunedin, has been appointed handicapper for the Dunedin Jockey Club, Mr White was recently appointed as handicapper for the Otago Hunt Club and the clubs in the Southland district.

Winner at Mentone A recent winner for Mr W. R. Kemball at Mentone was Vantage, who was bought at a Trentham yearling sale for 400 guineas. By Battle Song from Skyrest by Robespierre from Skyquest, Vantage is a half-brother to Don't Forget. In Good Order The Beau Vite-Serenata colt Liebestraum, winner of the New Zealand Derby, is recorted to be in good order to contest some of the big spring handicaps. He is by one of the best stayers the Dominion has produced in recent times and his dam holds the Dominion record for two miles. Just Missed

Bashful Lady just missed winning the Winter Cup three times. She won in 1942 and 1943, and was third in 1944, after receiving a check during the running. The Paper Money mare was at the stud and had a foal before she started racing. Better Terms

High Morale, the winner of the Homeby Steeplechase, will meet Eleanor Star on 51b and Brookby Song on 71b better terms in the Grand National Steeplechase, but the extra distance of the National may find him out. High Morale has contested 74 races for four firsts, 14 minor placings. and £1902 in stakes. In Jumpers’ Flat Wee Mac’s last placed performance was in the St. Clair Hack Handicap at the Wingatui meeting in June, when he carried 9.10 Into second place behind Volomai 8.0 over the 11-furiong Journey. On the second day of the Trentham meeting ha finished fifth in the Petone Hack Handicap, of one mile, and he should have been improved by that race. Wee Mac has 10.0 in the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap at Riccarton and he will not be the outsider of the field. Returning to Form

Da Vinci showed signs of returning to form by running second in the first division of the Brabazon Handicap and he should be a fit horse for the Grand National meeting. He had his last win in New Zealand about two years ago, when he won with 10.2. Ned Kelly

At the South Canterbury meeting in April Ned Kelly won the Smithfield Hack Handicap, of six furlongs, from Great Victory and All’s Fair, and on the same course a . month later he won the Claremont Handicap, of six furlongs, from All’s Fair and Bonny Royal. A four-year-old by Defaulter from Girouette, Ned Kelly is a smart galloper and he is not without prospects in the Avonhead Handicap.
