EXPLODING METEOR

MYSTERIOUS NOISES IN VICTORIA ASTRONOMER’S EXPLANATION SYDNEY. June 7. The New South Wales Government astronomer, Mr Harley' Wood, said that an exploding meteor had almost certainly caused a reported explosion over Mitiamo, near Bendigo. He expressed the opinion that the explosion probably occurred at a much higher altitude than the 10,000 ft reported by observers. Echoes would make it sound like more than one explosion. Similar occurrences were not uncommon; but were recognised by casual observers as meteors - only when they occurred at night. An earlier message said that mysterious explosions in a clear sky at 10,000 ft over Mitiamo had caused consternation. They were heard at points 40 miles apart, and were accompanied by puffs of greyish smoke. The first explosion occurred last Thursday, since when exhaustive investigations by army and air force authorities had produced no evidence of service tests in the vicinity.
