UNITED NATIONS APPEAL
Sir,—lt is with eiation I re-enter this correspondence. I have just read a paragraph in the Daily Times about a statement Mr Churchill is reported to have made about charity. • A bare two months ago I wrote that rationing could be abolished here in New Zealand, and that if Britain Utilised more of her grounds for the growing of life-giving produce, she would not have to ask for charity. I was criticised by Isabel Porteous and F. B. Gordon for having such a mean nature as to connect charity with Britain, and the want of its people with their lack of co-operation. Mr Churchill, who is believed by thousands, and is such a clear-headed and observing person, is stated to have said that " Britain was living on American charity.” He would know the full facts before he made such a statement, and yet he was rebuked. It .does not matter from which country charity comes—it still means that the receiver is dependent on the giver for sustenance. I think Mr Churchill for his moral support.—l am, etc.. Pro Bono Publico.
