“UNTIMELY REMARKS”
Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, May 26. It is 'being' said in London that •President Truman’s reported remarks to Dr Weizmann could not have been worse timed, says the diplomatic correspondent of The Times. What exactly the President said is not known, but according to Dr Weizmann, he favoured the lifting of the arms embargo and giving Israel a substantial loan. The correspondent says that these remarks were broadcast just when the Arab leaders in Amman are debating the Security Council's cease-fire proposals, which the British Government urged them to accept, while at the same time asking other Governments to refrain from any step which might tip the balance against Arab acceptance. In these circumstances, says the correspondent, President Truman’s remarks are deeply regretted in London. They seemed as though they might prove to be a grave indiscretion.
