SUCCESSFUL YEAR
OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS’ ASSOCIATION
The success of the centennial celebrations arranged by the association was mentioned in the report presented at the annual- meeting of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association last night by the president, Mr W. R. Brugh, on behalf of the committee. A record membership of 4001 was reported, 1204 new members having joined in the year.
The report described the association’s exhibition as an “ outstanding success.” A total of 22,563 persons had attended the display, which was opened in February by the Governor-General.
Discussing the functions arranged by the association, the report made special reference to the assistance of members of the Townswomen’s Guild and the Home Economics Association in catering for such large numbers. The provision of a fire-proof room and improved office accommodation was being kept in view, and the committee was looking forward to the lifting of the building restrictions.
The treasurer, Mr King, said in his report that the financial operations for the year had been gratifying. Receipts from subscriptions were about £250 above the figure for the previous year and interest on investments was higher and several bequests were received during the year. Because of the centenary, expenses were greater than usual.
Officers elected were:—President, Mr W. R. Brugh; vice-presidents—Messrs J. F. Fraser, Edgar Hazlett, J. C. H. Somerville, S. W. Macpherson, J. H. Paterson and G. C. Robertson; committee —Messrs W. H. Adams, D. C. Cameron, J. Dey, R. C. T. Evans, C. J. Hayward, G. Hutton, A. G. McKenzie, W. Martin, Crosby Morris, D. McG. Reid, J. S. Ross and E. Skinner.
