MASS MIGRATION

ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH PLAN FOR JAPANESE NEW YORK. May 23. The Roman Catholic Church in Japan has decided to establish a “secretariat for emigration,” to foster wholesale migration of the Japanese, says the New York Herald Tribune's correspondent in Tokio. The Most Rev. Peter Doe, Archbishop of Tokio, announced this during the annual meeting of 15 bishops. His church secretariat will explore all possible openings for emigration from Japan by contacts with leading churchmen in the less heavily-popu-lated countries and through them with their respective Governments. Particular attention will be paid to the African colonies and Latin America. The bishops took the decision after agreeing that church charitable organisations in . Japan .would be unable to cope with the pressure of increasing population. Japanese babies are being born at the rate of three a minute, and tire population 3 is now approaching 80,000,000 —without an empire—and it is expected to be 90,000,000 by 1960.
