SFORZA WITHDRAWS

Count Sforza, the Foreign Minister, withdrew” his candidature for the Presidency of the Italian Republic last night after the Socialist Unity Party’s announcement that it would not support him. Neither Count Sforza nor Signor Enrico de Nicola, provisional president of Italy since June, 1946, obtained the necessary two-thirds majority in either of the first two ballots at the joint meeting of the Senate and Deputies. In the first ballot, de Nicola received 396 votes and Sforza 353. The other candidates polled as follows: Luigi Einaudi 20, the ex-Premier, Signor Bonomi, 10, Vipriano Facchinetti 10, Alessandro Casati 5. In the second ballot Sforza, with 405 votes, had arrested the lead from de Nicola with 336 votes. The combined session adjourned for further balloting.
