SUPERIOR FORWARD PLAY
ZINGARI BEATS VARSITY B A strong and well-balanced pack was largely responsible for Zingari-Richmond’s victory by 9 points to 3 against University B in a bright and well-contested game at Carisbrook. A. E. Hellyer, W. Brown and R. Cody were at the head of most of tlie concerted rushes which were a feature of the Zingari forward play. The backs opened up the game, T. Moore and L. Watson combining well close to the scrum, but faulty passing further out spoilt many of the movements. R. Orr, the Otago full-back, making his first appearance for Zingari, played soundly, although he did not always find the line. The University forwards, in which 1. Logan, R. Cantwell and G. M. O’Neill were prominent, showed better combination in the second half, in which they held the opposing pack reasonably well. The game introduced to Carisbrook a centre three-quarter of much promise in J. Fitzgerald, who was the spearhead of the University attacking movements and was the best back on the ground, with R. Sellar lending excellent support. A. Phillips, a speedy wing three-quarter, scored two tries for Zingari-Richmond, and L. Watson also obtained a try. J. Gwynne scored for University. None of the tries were converted. Mr C. McLay was the referee.
