HOSPITAL ESTIMATES

APPROVED by board At a special meeting of the Otago Hospital Board yesterday, the estimates for the year April 1, 1948, to March 31, 1949, were approved without discussion. The meeting was attended by the acting-chairman, Mr A. Steel, Drs D. G. McMillan, N. H. North, and J. R. Fulton, and Mr A. A. Reid. The following is a summary of the estimates, the figures for 1947-48 being given in parentheses:—Maintenance receipts, £183,200 (£223,526 5s 3d); maintenance expenditure, £536,369 7s 2d (£476,314 19s lid); capital receipts, £216,779 2s 6d (£96,195 8s 7d); capital expenditure, £216,779 2s 6d (£96,195 8s 7d); loan money, £153,122 4s 7d (£83,470 11s 3d); levies on local authorities, £75,528 8s 8d; subsidies on levies, £483,601 Is Id. The total net expenditure was estimated at £559,129 9s 9d, comprising £353,169 7s 2d for maintenance and £205,960 2s 7d for capital. The total value of capital works for the year was estimated at £348,201 7s Id. Among works allowed for in these estimates were:—Mass radiography unit, £4500; alterations to administration block at Wakari, £10,000; alterations to Marinoto property, £6875; remodelling Hill Jack Hospital, £2505; alterations to isolation block, £7000; remodelling sewing room, £14,000; Talboys Home renovations, £10,000; Port Chalmers Maternity Hospital additions, £6487; transfer of Pleasant Valley Sanatorium to Wakari, £20,000; remodelling Nurses’ Home, Dunedin Hospital, £7000; Hill Jack Hospital purchase, £30,000; Quendon Maternity Hospital, £8000; Nurses’ Home, kitchen and dining room block, £16,254 15s sd; South wing Nurses’ Home, £48,135 8s lOd; theatre and ward block, £15,000; purchase of land Frederick street, £9208 15s 6d} Wakari secondary hospital, £50,000; obstetrical ward, £6OOO.
