FREIGHT SERVICE
INTERISLAND SHIPPING IMPROVEMENT TO BE SOUGHT Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Mar. 28. An attempt to secure improved freight shipping servive between Wellington and South Island ports is to be made by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. The co-operation of the South Island chambers is to be sought towards this end. Suggesting that this action be taken, Mr S. W. Peterson said at this week’s meeting of the Wellington Chamber that the shipping position between Wellington and South Island ports was deplorable. In Invercargill particularly it was a grave problem. ! There had been no ships to Bluff for more than two months, and the stock position in many lines there was serious. Merchants were forced to ship goods to Dunedin and then rail to Invercargill, which meant delays and increased costs and also aggravated the railway rolling stock shortage. The secretary, Mr E. M. Bardsley, said that the trouble did not lie with lack of ships, as there was more shipping tonnage available now than before the war. The turn-round was much slower. .
