LAWN TENNIS

SOUTH ISLAND TITLES PLAY WELL ADVANCED BOLD AND ROBSON REACH FINALS With the completion of play on Saturday, the second day of the South Island and Otago lawn tennis championship fourday tournament at Logan Park, the contestants in the major events had reached the final .stages. The weather was again perfect, and the events were completed to time, with play in the handicap sections well advanced. Otago men were well to the fore in the later stages of the Men’s Singles Championship. J. E. Robson (Otago) and O. Bold (Wellington) both won through to the finals. There was one surprise in the quarter-finals when the seeded Dunedin player, D. Radford, was beaten 6—l, B—6 by the Maniototo Sub-association entrant, S. Leask. The latter was, however, beaten by Robson G— o, 6 —l in the semifinals. In the other semi-final, J. W. Paterson (St. Clair) went down to Bold after holding his own in the first set. Patchy play by both men was possibly due to tiredness, but the Hutt Valley man played a tougher game to take the next two sets.

The withdrawal of the Otago champion, Miss Mavis Kerr, upset speculation in the Women’s Singles. Miss Kerr broke a finger while playing against the Australians in the north, and by the time the quarter-finals had been reached on Saturday the injury was becoming painful. Miss Kerr is, however, continuing in the Doubles with Mrs J. Adams. Two Southland players, Miss L. Barrett and Mrs J. Adams, were fairly well matched In the semi-finals. Miss Barrett had the worst of the first set, but overwhelmed her opponent in the next two sets, which she won 6—l, 6 —o. A tiring marathon between Mrs Ross (Palmerston) and Miss M. Robertson (St. Clair) was not completed, both players haying a set in. The Mixed Doubles were completed to the second round. The handicap events were particularly interesting for the excellent displays by the youngest entrants, two particularly promising youngsters being Sonia Cox, aged 11, and Iris Stuart, aged 15.
