American smokers are now consuming nearly 1,000,000,000 cigarettes a day—more than double the rate in 1939. A survey made recently showed that in 1946 cigarettes accounted for 77 per cent, of all tobacco products. for which consumers paid £1,056,000,000. The popularity of cigars and smoking tobacco has declined steadily.
