INTERESTING POSITION OTAGO v. CANTERBURY The cricket match between Otago and Canterbury for the Brabin Cup was in an interesting position at the close of the first day’s play at the North Ground on Saturday. Canterbury compiled 234, and Otago had lost three wickets for 130 at stumps. The Canterbury opening batsmen began quietly, but a second-wicket partnership between B. Kennedy and M. Poore produced some bright batting. The visiting batsmen shaped confidently against both the fast-medium and spin attack, and the rate of scoring did not slacken. The young Otago Boys’ High School player, C. Christie, took four wickets with his slow deliveries. Consistent and accurate spinners were also sent down by the hardest-worked member of the attack, R. Couper, who was rather luckless in gaining only one wicket. Otago suffered an early reverse when L. Graham was caught when he had scored eight. His opening partner, I. Burrows, played carefully at first, but later hit out attractively. He was undefeated with 47, which included six 4’s. Canterbury relied solely on a fast-medium attack.
