RETURN TO NORMAL
AMERICAN FILM IMPORTS INTO BRITAIN WITHDRAWAL OF EXTRA DUTY LONDON, Mar. 11. The President of the Board of Trade, Mr Harold Wilson, announced in the House of Commons, to-day that the 75 per cent, ad valorem duty on American films imported into Britain, imposed in August, 1947, would be withdrawn, and normal exports from Hollywood would be resumed as soon as possible. Mr Wilson said the film agreement fixed film earnings to be remitted to the United States for new films and reissues at 17,000,000 dollars a year for the first two years. He added that Britain at present was paying at the rate of approximately 50,000,000 dollars a year as remittances on reissues of films already in Britain. Additional remittances in dollars of sums equivalent to the earnings of British films in the United States would be permitted.
