REGULATION LIFTED
FOOD MINISTRY LIMITATION NUMBER OF GUESTS AT PUBLIC FUNCTIONS N.Z.P.A, Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 12. The Minister of . Food, Mr John Strachey, said in the House of Commons that the Government had decided to drop the regulation prohibiting gatherings of more than 100 guests at official dinners. The Minister said that nothing should give the impression that the need for national economy was less to-day than it was last autumn, when the regulation was imposed, but experience had shown that control of public functions by the limitation of numbers was not the most appropriate method. Restaurants and hotels will, however, continue to be restricted to the basic charge of 5s for each meal, with a limit of 7s 6d per head for extra charges. In cases where it is considered necessary to exceed the total charge of 12s 6d a head, it will still be necessary to obtain a special licence from the Food Ministry.
Managers of West End hotels said subsequently that they could not afford to serve meals at 12s 6d a head in private rooms, and would therefore have to apply for special permission to charge more.
