MEAT SUPPLIES
BUTCHERS’ EFFORTS
REQUIREMENTS TO BE MET
Every effort to procure sufficient supplies of meat to cover the requirements of the consumer public would be made by Dunedin butchers. This was announced by the president of the Dunedin Master Butchers’ 1 Association, Mr J. E. Bartlett, in a statement to the Daily Times last night. The recent announcement from the office of the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Nordmeyer, which stated that the Government would appoint a commission of inquiry to investigate all aspects of the retail meat industry, was welcomed by the trade, Mr Bartlett said. He added that the butchers on their part would cooperate with the Government and make such supplies as were procurable available to the public during the period in which the commission made its investigations. Mr Bartlett also announced that group buying would operate at the Burnside market next Wednesday. Although some customers were unable to obtain the meat they wanted yesterday, no one in Dunedin should experience a “meatless’’ week-end as a result- of the butchers’ action in not buying supplies at the weekly Burnside auction sale. Those butchers who bought their meat as usual at Burnside had ample supplies of beef, mutton, and lamb to offer their customers, but in other shops second grade mutton and lamb formed the bulk of the meat available.
