MATCH WITH AUSTRALIA DOMINION TEAM CHOSEN P.A. WELLINGTON, Mar. 12. The council of the New Zealand Chess Association has approved a proposed radio match with Australia on April 10, subject to negotiations over the rates being satisfactory. Those chosen to represent New Zealand, with Wellington as the New Zealand centre for the match, are:—J. A. Moir (Auckland), T. Lepviikmann (Palmerston North), H. McNabb (Nelson), H. R. Abbott (Christchurch), K. Beyer, A. W. Gyles, J. D. Steele, and R. G. Wade (Wellington), with R. O. Scott (Wellington), as emergency. It was decided to ask Australia to increase the match to 10 boards a side. The 1948-49 chess congress was allocated to Wanganui.
A proposal to write to Britain, Canada, South Africa, and Australia to send a representative each to take part in a British Empire chess championship in New Zealand in June, 1949, the holding country to be entitled to two representatives, was referred to the Management Committee for further investigation. As the Australian champion, Lajos Sterner, would be taking part in a regional tourney in connection with the world championship, it was reported that he wold be unable to tour New Zealand this year.
