Increased Killings For Export

Export meat killings for the period October 1, 1947, to February 14, 1948, show an increase of 11,294 tons on the killings for the corresponding period for last season, states the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. Last season’s tonnage of meat export was an all-time record. Tonnage increases in the various classes of stock for the October-February period are:—Lambs, 5394 tons; sheep, 1840 tons; beef, 2233 tons; pig meat, 1142 tons; edible offal, 685 tons. Of the total increase of 11,294 tons, the North Island contributed 5987 tons and the South Island 5307 tons.

Average killing weights to date for lambs, wethers and ewes show a general decrease in comparison with those last season. The weights, with last season’s in parentheses, are:—North Island: Lambs, 34.271 b (35.501 b); wethers, 61.951 b (63.181 b); ewes, 58.331 b (59.031 b). South Island: Lambs, 34.781 b (35.791 b); wethers, 51.941 b (59.741 b); ewes, 54.101 b (55.291 b). Details of the export killings for the October-February period, with the corresponding figures for the previous season in parentheses, are:— North Island.—Lambs, 4,204,630 carcasses (3,999,289); wethers, 206,524 carcasses (233,695); ewes, 579,849 carcasses (497,098); beef, 131,250 quarters (107,512); porkers, 13,013 carcasses (12,657); baconers, 92,695 carcasses (75,389). South Island.—Lambs, 1,971,300 carcasses (1,638,450); wethers, 9674 carcasses (11,255); ewes, 97,347 carcasses (61,894); beef, 2902 quarters (3052); porkers, 223 carcasses (624); baconers, 2791 (2934). .
