TROTTING NOTES

By the Sporting Editor March 6 .... Timaru T.C. March 6 .... Invercargill T.C. March 13, 20, 27 .. Metropolitan T.C Withdrawals for the first day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting must be made by 5 p.m. on Monday. The annual meeting of delegates of the New Zealand Trotting Conference will be held in Christchurch in August. Forbury Park Programme There will be more than usual interest in the appearance of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s programme for the centennial meeting on April 24 and May 1. The programme will probably be made public next week. For Melbourne

Highland Scott, who showed good form when trained by L. F. Berkett for Mr J. R. McKenzie to gain four wins and two minor placings in the 1945-46 season, has been sold to a Melbourne buyer, reports the Press. Happy Man and Traverse were also shipped to Melbourne last week. Notus

Notus, by Dillon Hall from Charming Child, has carried solid support in several of his starts this season, and although he has not won, he looks a likely improver. He was beaten by Silverlight in the John Hole Memorial Handicap at Washdyke in January, but he received a bad passage. He is racing on the same course to-day, and although he is giving away 36 yards to Sahara Queen in the Timaru Cup, this may not be beyond him. i

Three-year-old Pacers The Southland Three-year-old Stakes, to be decided at Invercargill to-day, has drawn a field of 10, no fewer than eight of whom were sired by Dillon Hall. The probable favourite, however, is likely to be the Black Globe gelding Quarterdeck, a half-brother to Aberhall. Quarterdeck was successful in the Winton Juvenile Stakes, and then beat a mixed field at Vincent, and for these wins he is giving all the field, with the exception of Tutta Bella, 24 yards. Tutta Bella, the only other winner engaged, won at Wyndham on New Year’s Day, and was third to Victory Dale and Decreed at Winton. Another useful youngster is Amarant, who ran second to Joan McKinney at Gore last month. Unlucky Pacer

The Grattan Loyal pacer, Carisbrook, has been five times in the money this season without winning. He carried solid support in the Musselburgh Handicap on the opening day of the Forbury Park meeting, but though badly interfered with at the start, he finished fourth. He is off the limit in the Timaru Trotting Cup to-day, and though that company may be a little too good for him, his consistency may be rewarded with a winning bracket in the near future. Racing To-day Admiral Peterson, winner of the Wallaceville Handicap at Hutt Park last Saturday, is engaged in the Washdyke Handicap at Timaru to-day. Admiral Peterson ran out a solid two miles in his Wellington race, but lost any chance he had of making it a double success for the day when he broke under pressure in the Waiwhetu Handicap later in the afternoon, when penalised 48 yards. To-day’s race is a mile and a-quarter, and he may find Kimono Girl and the Dunedinowned Bull’s Eye the most difficult to head off at the finish. Well-bred Youngsters One of the star attractions at Washdyke to-day will be the Timaru Nursery Stakes, in which a large field of wellbred two-year-olds will face the starter. The performance of the Gamble—Starace filly, Star Rosa, in winning the first division of the two-year-old parade at the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association’s trials at Addington on Tuesday will probably see her installed favourite. She is trained at West Melton by S. A. Edwards.
