RIFLE SHOOTING

NATIONAL MEETING LARGE NUMBER OF ENTRIES EARLY SUCCESSES TO OPAKI P.A. TRENTHAM, Mar. T. A fishtail wind which increased in intensity as the day wore on, coupled with the smaller Bisley bull now in operation, proved a stern test for riflemen at the second national meeting since the war, which began at Trentham to-day. Last year’s belt winner, H. King (Opaki) got away to a fine start by winning the Wellington Match at 500 and 600 yards.: The entries totalled 331, indicating that rifle shooting is practically back to pre-war strength. The day’s programme was composed of a Three-range Opening Match at 300, 500 and 600 yards (non-champion-ship) and a Wellington Match at 500 and 600 yards, which was the first of the Belt series. The Opaki Club had a double success, H. K. Smith winning' the opening match with the good total of 100 (33, 34, 33) and King. annexing the Wellington Match with 94 (48 and 46). Other leading scores in the first match of the Belt series included J. W. Johnson (Featherstoh), runner-up to King last year, W. J. Burton (Gisborne) finished fifth, and M. Gordon, the 21-year-old Okawa rifleman who. registered 93. Gordon finished in nineteenth place for the Belt last year. The Belt series will be continued tomorrow with the Canterbury (300 and 500 yards), Otago <3OO yards) and Hawke’s Bay (600 yards) Matches.
