THE ROYAL FAMILY

ATTENDANCE AT THEATRE PERFORMANCE BY AMERICAN COMEDIAN N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 1. Princess Margaret, who had previously rocked with laughter at Danny Kaye’s performance at the Palladium, evidently influenced her parents, the King and Queen, and Princess Elizabeth to see the show also. All four of them, with the Duke of Edinburgh, went to the Palladium and sat in the front row of the stalls to see the American comedian, and the King was so busy watching the top-speed fooling that one of the three cigarettes he smoked went out. Kaye invited Sid Field, the English comedian, who is shortly visiting the United States, on to the stage and after the show they were received by the Roval party. Kaye cracked jokes with them for half an hour, “and.” he said afterwards. “ the King cracked back at me.”

The Royal Family will shortly begin a series of more serious engagements. Their Majesties most important one this year is likely to be the service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in April to cmnmemorate their silver wedding. Though no details have yet been published, itis believed that they will drive to the Cathedral in state with the Sovereign’s Escort of Household Cavalry.

On April 23, Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh will be among the Knights to be installed at the Knights of the Garter ceremony at St. George's Chapel, Windsor. This ceremony, which the King decided to revive, has not been performed for 150 years, or since the reign of George 111. It will be followed by a service to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Order founded by Edward 111. In May, Princess Elizabeth will visit Coventry’ to open the reconstructed square, and Oxford to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws from the University. She will go o>~ to Cardiff to receive the freedom of that city and then visit Bath.
