NOTES ON THE RACING

Pioneer Hurdles Foxchase had his first win over hurdles when he won the Pioneer Hurdles. He had too much pace on the flat for the other runners and after being handily placed running down the back he was one of the first into the straight and went on to win, although he screwed at the last fence. Wee Mac was the first to break the line and led out from Forage, the order past the stand being Wee Mac, Forage. Robert, Liquidate, and Gunther. Robert went up fast across the top and showed the way into the back from Forage, Wee Mac, Foxchase, Incitatus, Gunther and Voltaire. Foxchase and Gunther were closing on Robert coming across the bend and Foxchase led Gunther over the last fence, going on to win by half a length, with Incitatus three lengths away and Wee Mac fourth. Then came Sir Saladin, Liquidate, Forage, Robert, and First Out. s Goldfields Handicap Greyfel, Bonny Lancer, and Subtraction got away badly. Helio, Putechan, Wild Spec and Victory Star began best, and they were followed out of the barrier by Ara Chief and Faustina. With half a mile to run Helio was shading Putechan, and then came Ara Chief, Wild Spec, Faustina, Victory Star and Eton Lad. Into the straight it was Helio, Putechan, Wild Spec, Victory Star, Ara Chief and Faustina. It looked as though Helio had the race won, but Victory Star came with a fine run to win going away from Helio, with Putechan holding on for third ahead of Wild Spec. Eton Lad was next, followed by Ara Chief, The Grate and Gay Music. Blundell Handicap Heroic Girl won the Blundell Handicap after being prominent throughout. Jan, on the rails, was chopped out at the start, and the first to show out were Bonny Royal, Irish King, Flying Control, Heroic Girl, Relampago, and Sea Venture. There was little change in the order as they ran down to the half, except that Bren Gun was moving up. As they straightened up for the run home Bonny Royal showed the way and was followed by Irish King, Relampago, Heroic Girl, Flying Control,

Sea Venture, Winning Cheer and Bren Gun. In a fine race home Heroic Girl won from Sea Venture, with Defendant coming from a long way back for third ahead of Jan, who finished better than anything else. Then came Billy Mac, Relampago, Bonny Royal and Petty Cash. Philip Laing Handicap Frances was chopped out, and trailed the field most of the way. The order out of the barrier was Stagestruck, Lovemorn, Bath Slipper, Sanskrit, and Gipsy Major. As they galloped past the four-furlong post Sanskrit and Lovemorn were handy to Stagestruck, and then the order was Desert Girl, Patmos, Deep Harmony, and Dileas. Stagestruck dropped out soon after the straight was reached, and Sanskrit and Deep Harmony worked out to the front, followed by Lovemorn. Sanskrit held Deep Harmony off by half a length, with Lovemorn the same distance further back and Bath Slipper fourth. The order after the placed lot was Desert Girl, Patmos, and Frances.
