Six-figure Turnover Reached

ATTENDANCE TOTAL SOARS Signal Officer Successful Records are made to be broken and this was the fate of another one at Wingatui on Saturday, when, for the first time in the history of galloping in Otago and Southland, the totalisator returns reached six figures and set a new record for any galloping or trotting meeting in Otago or Southland. The weather and the track conditions were perfect and a crowd equal in proportion to that of the first day saw some fine racing. The meeting was successful beyond even the most optimistic forecasts and the atmosphere surrounding it was in keeping with the centennial celebrations. In the Otago Handicap Spare Part was preferred in the betting to Signal Officer, but the top-weight ran one of his best races and scored a very popular win and broke the track record.

The Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, and Lady Freyberg were again in attendance. The gate receipts for the day amounted to £2064 10s, compared with £7lB 4s on the second day of the autumn meeting last year, an increase of £1346 6s. For the two days the receipts amounted to £4135, compared with £1479 18s, an increase of £2655 2s. The totalisator handled £109,187 for the day, a record for a single day at any meeting, racing or trotting, in Otago and Southland. On the second day of last year’s autumn meeting, the totalisator receipts amounted to £43,535 10s. The total for the two days was £203,278 10s, compared with £89,720 10s last year, an increase of £113,558.
