A WORTHY EFFORT
CARNIVAL WEEK PRAISED MR HOLLAND’S MESSAGE High praise for Dunedin’s carnival week effort was expressed by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, before his departure for Invercargill yesterday. “ Before leaving Dunedin,” said Mr Holland, ‘‘l should like to express my grateful thanks to the Mayor, Mr Cameron, and to all those responsible for the organisation of the centennial celebrations for their great kindness to my wife, my two daughters and myself, during a most memorable week. The hospitality of the Dunedin people has been quite overwhelming, and my family and I count it a privilege to have been able to share in last week’s programme of festivities. “ Dunedin has done herself proud, and has risen to the greatest heights," Mr Holland added. “ I believe the celebrations will do much to advance the city in particular and the province in general. “If anyone has in the past had any inferiority complex, because Dunedin has a little smaller population than the other three main centres, surely last week will remove it, for no other city could have staged a more successful and spectacular yet restrained and dignified carnival than Dunedin has put on. “All of us who are visitors appreciate to the full what has been done to ensure our pleasure and enjoyment,” said Mr Holland, “and it is with a sense of deep gratitude that we now leave for our homes, taking with us the most pleasant memories of a happy experience and an appreciation of how things should be done. “ I wish to congratulate all those responsible for organising the festival and the many hundreds of people who have worked so untiringly behind the scenes to make it the unqualified success it has been. . “Kia Ora, Dunedin, and thank you ever so much,” were Mr Holland’s parting words.
