FEMININE FEATURE

FLOWERS AND FASHIONS CONTRAST PROVIDED From the feminine point of view one of the most interesting features of the Centennial Flower Show will be the Cavalcade of Flowers and Fashions, which will be presented on the stage of the Town Hall on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Period gowns from 1770 to the present day will be worn by temporary mannequins and floral accessories will be employed in the styles typical of the various periods depicted. The first gown, a brocaded frock of vintage 1770, has a most interesting history. Found in an old chest at Edinburgh Castle, it belonged to the Buccleugh family and was worn by the Scottish authoress, Miss Stirling Graham, in 1821. It was later mentioned in her book, “ Mystification.” Subsequently it was purchased at John Knox’s house in Edinburgh and brought to New Zealand by the Thomson family, of Halfway Bush. It will be lent for the occasion by Mrs W. A. Thomson.

Crinolines, with posies and floral bonnets, a Victorian bridal gown, a green brocade evening frock and a white linen and lace day frock will be among the many gowns modelled. Flowers will be used to decorate fans, bonnets, parasols and other feminine appurtenances. An Edwardian wedding party, with the bride in magnolia satin and lace and the six attendants in rainbow coloured frocks, will be one of the features of the display. By way of contrast a 1948 bride will also parade, with her attendants, the party featuring modern bouquets and hair sprays.
