CITY WATER SUPPLY
STEPS TO IMPROVE POSITION TRIAL BORE AT TAIERI Information concerning the steps being taken to augment the city’s water supply in the near future was given to the City Council at its meeting last night by Cr N. D. Anderson, chairman of the Water Committee, in reply to a question asked by Cr C. J. Hayward. Cr Anderson said that progress in the sinking of a trial bore on the Taieri Plains near the Wingatui road was being continued! and a depth of 765 feet had been reached at noon that day. The total depth of gravel passed through so far was 149 feet. Most of it appeared to be good water-bearing gravel. The indications were certainly of a promising nature. “We all know that the water position has become rather serious during the last seven days,” Cr Anderson continued, “and it has become necessary from 6.30 p.m. to-morrow to close the outlet from the reservoirs between 6.30 p.m. and 7 a.m. and between the hours of 12 noon to 5.30 p.m.” Cr Anderson said that by the next meeting of the council he was very hopeful that he would be able to give some idea when the water position would be eased as far as additional water supplies were concerned. The main difficulty at present was the shortage of pipes. The chairman added that he hoped within the next three weeks the city engineer would be able to give som? information as to when the supply position would be eased and very considerably improved. The Mayor: I sincerely hope you won’t get any water to-morrow! The discussion • then closed.
