NO BUYING AT AUCTION

FAT STOCK IN CANTERBURY DECISION BY BUTCHERS P.A. CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 23. After February 25 no fat stock will be bought at auction by butchers in Canterbury. The butchers will buy all stock on the hook at the point of killing at the fixed export schedule with the additional id per lb allowed in the fixing of retail prices. This decision was reached at a meeting of the Canterbury Master Butchers’ Association to-day. The prices to be paid on tne hoof will be:— Lamb.—Under 361 b, Is Id lb; over 361 b, Is lb (red stripe). lOid lb (blue stripe). • Wethers and Maiden Ewes.—Up to 641 b, 8d lb; over 641 b, 42s 8d each (red stripe); up to 641 b, 53d (blue stripe). Ewes. —Up to 641 b, 53d lb (blue stripe); over 641 b. 30s 8d each. Beef.—Prime 53s per 1001 b (red stripe); 42s per 1001 b (blue stripe). Veal. —5d lb (red stripe); 4d lb (blue strine). . Pork.—Up to 1201 b, 10£d lb (red stripe); 8d lb (blue stripe)'. In a statement after the meeting the president of the association, Mr E. R. Blanchard, said that the retail trade had -never been granted any relief by way of subsidy or price increase to cover the increased costs of paper and string, killing charges, and increased wages These had been carried by the trade and the burden, together with the uncontrolled buying price under auction, compelled the butchers to do something.
